Title

The massacre on Dunlavin green: a story of the 1798 rebellion.

Description

In 1798 many areas of Ireland were ripped apart by rebellion. Revolutionary ideas from America and France, the Society of United Irishmen and the spontaneous action of the people in many parts of the country all combined to make 1798 the most violent time in Ireland's history since the Williamite wars of the seventeenth century.

Recent studies of 1798 have shown that violence was not confined to those areas traditionally associated with the rebellion – Wexford, North-East Ulster and Mayo. Other areas were also involved, and West Wicklow was one such area.

The picturesque village of Dunlavin was the scene of a horrific episode in 1798. Thirty-six unarmed and defenceless prisoners who had been arrested before the rebellion broke out were taken out and shot on the fairgreen. This book analyses the tensions that were apparent in the locality before the massacre. An account of the causes of the massacre, as well as a study of the personalities involved is given. The events that happened on the fateful day of the massacre itself are examined and the consequences of the event are also explored. The book makes extensive use of archival material as well as using other sources, including local ballads and folk-memory. It is a welcome addition to the growing number of works concentrating on local history, and to the body of literature covering the period of the 1798 rebellion.
