General O’Brien: West Wicklow to South America



John O’Brien was born in Baltinglass in 1786. As a young man he emigrated to South America, where he became involved in the independence movements. During his distinguished military career, he rose to the rank of general. Following the wars of independence, he was involved in exploration and mining in the new South American republics. In later life, he undertook some diplomatic missions and helped to establish relations between South American countries and Europe. General John Thomond O’Brien died in Lisbon in 1861.


In addition to information on the life of John Thomond O'Brien, this book includes background history and genealogy of the O’Brien family in West Wicklow and South America.
