Title

From the Norman moat to the Spanish Field: a history of Naas Christian Brothers’ School.

Description

The Christian Brothers first arrived in Naas in 1871. From that time onwards they were continually involved in the education of local boys, first in the Moat School and later in Méanscoil Iognáid Rís. This is the story of the establishment and growth of a school community. It is a story of a struggle against the odds, of educating the young male population of Naas against the backdrop of scant resources, insufficient funds and lack of space. It is ultimately the story of triumph in the face of adversity and the contribution made by the Christian Brothers in Naas was formally recognised when they received a civic award from Naas Urban District Council in November 2001. Méanscoil Iognáid Rís currently caters for over a thousand pupils with a staff of nearly a hundred. Although the Christian Brothers have left the school their influence and tradition live on in the education given in Naas C.B.S.
